Vintage Overhills Golf Course Historic Poster – Donald Ross Design
16 x 24"
Step Into the Secret World of Overhills
For the better part of a century, the grand estate of Overhills was little more than a whisper hidden deep within the North Carolina pine forests. Located just down the road from Pinehurst and Southern Pines, this private 30,000-acre sanctuary was an "idyllic Southern Arcadia" owned by the Rockefellers and an ultra-exclusive circle of world-shaping figures.
This premium historic poster brings to life the lost brilliance of Overhills' crown jewel: its magnificent golf course, designed with an absolutely free hand by the legendary Scottish-American golf architect, Donald Ross.
The History Behind the Print
When commissioned to build the course, Donald Ross was given unprecedented instructions by Percy Rockefeller:
"Here, Mr. Ross, you have 3,500 acres of property to choose from. I want a golf course that will have no superior... and do not consider expense when making your plans, you have an absolutely free hand."
Ross delivered his most flamboyant, "baroque" masterpiece. Created during his most exuberant design phase in the 1910s, the original layout featured massive, dramatic hazards—including bunkers over 60 yards long and trenches up to 20 feet deep—seamlessly integrated into the rolling Carolina terrain. Today, architectural experts call the original layout a "national treasure" equivalent to a Rembrandt.
Historical Highlights of Overhills:
• The Ultimate Private Club: A private retreat for families like the Rockefellers, Harrimans, and Walkers.
• The Donald Ross Masterpiece: Designed during Ross's most creative and dramatic era, featuring extraordinary balance, shifting angles, and bold ornamentation.
• A Lost Landscape: While the modern grounds became a shadow of their former self, this piece celebrates the original, undiluted brilliance unearthed in Ross's detailed historical sketches.
